How to Fix Scratches on a Car

If you find that you have a small scratch on your vehicle, then here are some different DIY methods you can use to help you take care of that scratch yourself:

  • Candle Wax: Rub candle wax over the area to seal the scratch after the area has been cleaned. Note that this should only be used as a temporary solution until you can get it permanently fixed.
  • Wet Sandpaper: If you have a shallow scratch just on the surface of your vehicle, then rub 2000-grit wet sandpaper over the area. Once the scratch is nearly invisible, use a rubbing compound followed with a finer polish, and then use a wax or paint sealant to protect the area. Be sure to wash your car before using any kind of scratch removal.
  • Touch-Up Paint: This can quickly be applied to hide deeper scratches and can usually be found at most Niagara-on-the-Lake-area service centers.
  • Super Glue: This will blend in with the vehicle and help mask the scratch, but this is also only a temporary fix.
  • Paint Polish/Rubbing Compound: Use a light polish with a lightly abrasive foam pad, then slowly work your way up to higher-level polishes or rubbing compounds if the scratch is still there. If the scratch isn’t removed after polishing, then try wet-standing.

  • Plunger: Using this common household item is a quick and efficient way to level out a dent in your vehicle with a few swift tries.
  • Hammer or Mallet: Use one of these items on the opposite side of the dent, and knock the spot back out into place. For smaller dents, use the hammer. For larger dents, you’ll want to use the mallet. Make sure that you put a towel or something over the side you are hammering to protect it from getting damaged.
  • Dent Puller: This method is a little more complicated as it requires drilling a hole into the dent itself, putting a wire through the hole, and pulling the dent to surface level. Once the dent is level, you’ll need to fill the hole that you drilled, sand the surface area down, and paint over the dent.
