Mercedes-Benz Key Fob Battery Replacement: Step-by-Step

Here’s what you need to know when approaching how to change the battery in your Mercedes-Benz key in Niagara-on-the-Lake:

  • What Type of Key Fob Do You Have?: There are two types of key fobs your vehicle may utilize: the newer Chrome SmartKey® or the older SmartKey®. The type of key you have will slightly change the process for switching out the battery.
  • Choose the Proper Replacement Battery: The Chrome SmartKey® needs one CR2025 battery, while the older SmartKey® style requires two.
  • Replacing the Newer Chrome SmartKey®: For the newer style of Chrome SmartKey®, simply pull the tab at the bottom of the fob, remove the casing by pushing the key into the narrow end of the slot, then remove the old battery and replace it with the new battery.
  • Replacing the Older SmartKey®: Pelham drivers with an older SmartKey® will pull the latch at the end of the key fob casing, push the key horizontally into the open slot, then lift the old batteries out of their compartment and set the two new ones in place.

How Will I Know If it’s Time for a Battery Replacement?

It’s no secret when your Mercedes-Benz key fob battery needs to be replaced. Here are the clear warning signs to watch out for:

  • If your push-button start vehicle requires multiple attempts to start, it could be because the key fob battery is low.
  • You may lose the ability to lock/unlock your doors or activate the panic alarm.
  • Your dashboard may display a warning light that alerts you to an issue with the charging system, which could be caused by a dying battery in your key fob.

If your vehicle exhibits one or all of these warning signs, you will want to proactively change the battery in your key fob so you don’t deal with further frustrations in the future. If you change the battery and these problems persist, you will want to contact our service centre to inquire about what may be the issue and get a Mercedes-Benz service cost estimate.
